acid fans may well be aware of dj arg (also known as faceless junkies deluxe) and know that the man is a machine, literally churning out hundreds of the nastiest and most purist 303 based techno and house tracks and uploading them with alarming regularity to his soundcloud pages. super rhythm trax is proud to present to you his first vinyl release, it was really hard to decide on just four tracks, but these ones were jumping out for a release. sick and twisted 303 abuse for lovers of the silver box.

serendipity - defined as making discoveries or happy accidents - is the debut ep by liam van ryn. its a fitting description for the richly textured and cinematic four track collection that was the result of intensive and prolonged sessions goofing around on analogue gear. strictly limited 12 pressing this is a hell of a debut - one to watch for the future! the title track is the most immediately wonderful cut here, with choked arpeggios, clouds of caustic static and found scrapes as percussion. dj mag (8/10 ep review) early support from: nathan fake - interesting lush sounds lanark artefax - sounds great and is really coherent for a debut ep tessela - this is wicked man, really like that pitch1! based in hull, van ryn makes richly textured and layered, cinematic music that is both experimental and (mostly) electronic. i was interested in the way i could make the music sound slightly unnatural, or like it couldnt be played by a real musician, even though that was often the starting point, he explains. box.

bikiniarz is the newly launched imprint of german producer sawlin, known for his seminal releases on delsin records and vault series. with this label, sawlin goes back to his musical roots while integrating the various influences that shaped his style ever since he decided to become a musician: subtly indebted to the 90 s while living up to contemporary big room standards. the releases are resolutely out of the box, yet groovy as hell and meant to be played out loud in underground techno clubs.

after “star alliance”’s initial release as a limited six tape-box set, it was apparent that there was a need for a reissue, which now comes in the form of this remastered double lp set with a selection of the best work and even a few new tracks added. the story is the same but the narrative has been sharpened.

amsterdam based luuk van dijk is welcomed into the hot creations fold this july with his heavy-hitting parallax e.p. chicago production wizard dj skull is also on board to rework the b-side. title track parallax is set to cause a serious stir at festivals and clubs alike this summer. the smattering of high-hats elevate the track as the space-like beeps and blips add another facet. on the flip, dimension applies an ominous vocal stab as the bass rumbles — perfect for low ceiling basement raves. on the remix, dj skull adds a touch of chicago class via some softer vocals, dubby chords and a pounding bass. at the tender age of 22, luuk van dijk has been signed to acclaimed labels such as viva music, roush, food music, sanity and lost records. championed by stalwarts such as steve lawler and eats everything, he has taken his sound to some of the world’s most prestigious events. ron maney aka dj skull became known for being one of the first djs to play the new sound coming out of chicago, honing his craft at the infamous music box and power plant. releasing records since the early 90s, he later launched his own labels hypnotic tones and wax candy records. recent releases have appeared on chiwax, domina trxxx and mentha records.

for the fourth installation on boogie box records, appleblim links up with the middle east crew to deliver one of two eps planned for 2018. first up. two original tracks by the bristolian artist, vurstep and dream wisdom. signature appleblim crossover sound, floating between bass, d&b, electronica and house influences, with early carl craig/psyche/bfc and 4 hero watching over. on the b side, vurstep gets a rework by shed and forest drive west. always on point, shed does what he does best. a grooving old school flavored bass and breakbeats remix. followed by forest drive west s stripped down, mind humping, feet tapping basement flavor.

some crate-digging compilations are often the result of someone hand-picking their choice favourites from another country’s musical history, perhaps unaware or uninvolved with its cultural lineage in the process. on this release - a treasure trove of synth jams, pop, samba boogie, balearic and electro from 1980 & ‘90s brazil - the tracks are picked by millos kaiser, one half of the brazilian duo selvagem, who are at the helm of throwing some of the country’s best dance parties. it’s a rare compilation that offers brazilian music actually picked by a brazilian.
this collection of sixteen tracks doesn’t comprise tracks scoured from deeply in-demand records, the rare sort that sell for eye-watering sums and that collectors spend years tracking down. they are the sort you’d find for a few quid should you come across but, as kaiser says, “the problem is finding them. they aren’t rare because everyone wants a copy but because no one wants them, not even the dealers.”

broken arrows are sudeep menon & bill ambrose, both long time affiliates of magic waves radio and cyber dance records. here they don 4 new tracks for the vivod imprint making up their second ep. a slight departure in style from their first outing on giallo disco a couple of years ago, these tracks still have that unique mechanic box jam sound they are becoming known for. female predator kicks things off in a techno fashion. charging drums lead the way with a cool throbbing bassline. fear eats the soul is more of an instrumental 80s wave track with its laid back pads and structure looping away with ease. title track edge of darkness is the stand out track on this ep and won t fail to hypnotize. meandering pads in a cosmische style with rock solid drums , simply awesome. basic structures finishes the ep off and this is more towards their jamming style from their previous ep, more aggressive, blistering hats, slamming kicks et. great ep again from broken arrows !

word of advice to funk lovers, there is not a minute to lose. get on board of the big hustle’s spaceship. before we take off, let s do a little history. the band was founded in 2014 by bass player and composer sébastien levanneur and its aim is to bring together 70 s old school funk with the hippest actual sound laced with influences spanning from steely dan and headhunters, to snarky puppy and soulive. with mighty horn players, a rock and funky rhythm section, the big hustle s music has a very large variety of soundscapes. the first destination takes us to the washington, d.c. area with “turn up”. the groove is clearly go-go music flavored with the trademark sound of cowbells and of course it reminds us of zapp by the use of the talk box on lead vocals, performed here by saad el garrab. and don t miss out shaun martin (snarky puppy, erykah badu, kirk franklin amongst others) as a very special guest performing the talk box solo! second stop is “a curse, a blessing”. it’s an instrumental very much in the freddie hubbard vein during his cti years. the last leg of the a side ends with an instrumental interlude titled “flying donut”. double tribute to jay dee and flying lotus, the music is a simple hip hop loop based on samples. the b side takes us back into the past with two brilliant covers, involving rod temperton the late great british songwriter who scored some of michael jackson s biggest hits. now the idea for this b side is to do the opposite approach from the a side. taking 70 s and 80 s original music and make them travel into time to 2018. we first land with a heatwave song named “the star of a story” from their 1976 central heating album. track 2 is a herbie hancock song named “gettin to the good part” from his 1982 lite me up lp. this time traveler ep journey ends with an interlude. called “gimme dat”, the song deals with the need of new music, new sound. again, this blend of deep rooted funk laced with a contemporary edge is to be consumed without moderation. and do not forget that e.p. also stands for extended pleasure.

since the release of their critically acclaimed debut album in 2013 on names you can trust, la mecánica popular has quietly been contemplating the evolution of the group s sound, philosophy, and overall approach to making music. band leader efraín rozas experimental nature has continually pushed the boundaries of his own definition of not only latin american music, but its broader relationship with music s global culture and history. the sound of -psychedelic salsa- that lmp helped capture in their debut was destined for further outside-the-box interpretations, and with the formation of a new quintet lineup over the last few years, lmp began to incorporate a more free, improvised and instrumental-focused performance of rozas increasingly radical compositions. the band subsequently took this liberated approach directly into the studio, recording roza cruz live, in its entirety. it was a cathartic experience, a necessary methodology for the new album s concept that embraced the intimate performance of its players and did away with standard techniques of isolation and overdubs. the evolution of the band s sound on roza cruz brings forth a blend of styles rarely heard together, a touch reminiscent of electric-era miles davis or eddie palmieri at his most experimental, as the driving force of timbales and congas provide a bed for a wave of lush, analog amplification that mirrors the dueling leads of fuzz guitar and electric piano. but as far out as those instruments take the listener, the raw rhythm the clave always keeps it tethered to the earth and the dance, a cerebral yet visceral gift for the mind and feet.

matt edwards newly launched reissue label, r-time records, prepares its third release, the second instalment of sir lord comixx retroactive. r-time records shines a light on classic tracks that didnt always get the recognition they deserve, with the labels first two releases coming from sir lord comixx and fbk. real name amoon andrews, sir lord commix’s discography has been in high demand for many years, evident by soaring market prices. the a-side of retroactive (part two) features two tracks from a rare untitled release on hard up, whilst the b-side is made up of chicago jazz from the funk box ep on eukahouse (under his a.moon moniker in 98) and motionvibe from azid jazz ep on cynic in 05. cosmic synths join wonky arps in ur my omen before moving into the more up-tempo fog horn with its robust drums, off-beat bleeps and filtered effects. chicago jazz takes things into deeper territories with crystalline rhodes and jazz-influenced samples until motionvibe concludes the package with its syncopated structure comprised of twisted sounds, murky atmospherics and effervescent nuances.

our boss claude vonstroke is the busiest guy we know. when hes not traveling the world or curating an event, hes in the studio every day putting in hours upon hours, relentless in perfecting his craft. hes had a slew of hits the past couple years in the form of remixes and collaborations, and now with the walay (my bae) ep, claude gets back to some inventive and somewhat out of the box solo works. the title song leads with a melodic riff and an funky vocal that sounds like a defective cyborg is proclaiming love for his partner, walay. this quasi-human uses the slang my bae to try and pass for human and we almost believe in his passion. the sound harkens back to old classic rave tracks but also pushes very modern production techniques. on the flip, raw nerve is an emotional exploration in both sounds and lyrics. a melancholy vonstroke dives deep into his insecurities and fears with sonically mutated lyrics like im feeling so sad, im feeling real bad today. when i see you on the street i dont want to compete. you can feel the social instability oozing out of the vocal only to come back at the close with a violently hard bassline embodying the personal angst and frustration that goes along with not fitting in.

the colorful world of arp frique is the exotic and super funky debut album of niels nieuborg. after his surprising, very well received debut release on rush hour, arp frique continues collaborating with orlando julius, ed motta, americo brito, ronald snijders and more! tip! . pulsating nyc style live disco vibes, interwoven with both caribbean and cape verdean sounds, are themes throughout the record with danceability always guaranteed and a healthy finishing touch of weirdness present across most tracks. first single ‘nos magia’ was shortlisted for track of the year 2017 at gilles peterson’s worldwide awards and has been given airplay by bbc radio 6 music, bbc radio 1 and nts whilst club djs antal and hunee have all supported the track in their sets.

futile demise ep is an emotional and disconcerting journey through the mind of finnish artist juha puupera. drawing on influences from norwegian black metal, uk sound system culture and italian horror cinema of the 1970s, gruth mixes dark and aggressive tones in his sonic palette. his production methods are often experimental and the style rarely fits into one box as it spans forward-thinking techno, black ambient and doom industrial. with his ep, gruth shapes montevideo-based tormenta electrica label’s first release. of the four tracks featured, two are collaborations with the finnish techno and ambient artist ikola, known for his etherwerks label, while the mysterious helsinki-based violinist and sound designer kujo contributes to the other two.

coming off transmission, death in vegas’s critically acclaimed 6th album which saw the band collaborating with sasha grey, are three unique remixes by silent servant and rudolf klorzeiger.

silent servant delivers two stunning mixes of you disco i freak. in his first remix he elevates the discordant melody in you disco i freak and adds a sense of menace with a new sequence, taking the track in a more sinister direction. with his second version, he takes the heat up a notch with a brutal workout synonymous with his signature abrasive sound.

two miscreants of uk electronics have been drafted in by shipwrec for a 12- of techno debauchery. richard bevan and joshu doherty, aka posthuman, have been addicted to acid from their first contact with the caustic and cruel chords of the tb303. since then the two cousins have gone on to curate 10 years of i love acid as well as doling out some toxic classics of their own. the duo deliver the soured goods once again, starting the audio anarchy with the ominously titled -netflix and kill-. drum patterns are gnarled and nasty in this slow burning jacker where basslines boil over into a thick syrup of late night revelry. the flip is taken over by the bullying sounds of -the damocles syndicate.- the track rumbles with venomous menace. coils of 303 spite bulge and contract under the strict resolve of a stern beat in this ready made floor filler. two helpings from two malevolent masters of the silver box.

over the past few years orchestral instrumental music from outside the classical establishment has become huge, and neil leiter and margaret hermant of the belgian echo collective have witnessed the evolution and extraordinary rise of this movement right up close. they ve worked with some of the most important players, including stars of the lid, dustin o’halloran and adam wiltze’s a winged victory for the sullen and o’halloran’s solo projects, as well as jóhann jóhannsson. and though the echo collective members themselves very much do come from within the classical music establishment, they don t care which side of the fence they are seen to be on.

emanton (dann abala) is an argentinian producer, electronic musician and thereminist. after studying with synth maestro ernesto romeo, dann began producing under emanton and also has an experimental alias as turvia. here we have what emanton perfectly describes as hard esoteric/mystical/ mega darkness sound. four dark and pounding tracks with leanings toward industrial in uences and maintaining a consistently propulsive sound-design techno vibe. carefully crafted with a diverse spread of analog gear/synths and modular instruments. absolutely perfect example of the transfusions aesthetic.

another alias returns with the second installment of white of my eyes. wome002 continues along the path laid out by 001, but takes it a step further into varied moods from the sledgehammer-esque -heave- to the melancholy -creep on the couch. while keeping with his off-kilter rhythms and erratic synth work.

groenis -nihx- entstand am fuße des mount victoria. nihx wollten sich kompositorisch und klanglich herausfordern und untersuchten die merkmale von konfliktpunkten zwischen gegnerischen kräften. wie in der vergangenheit und wie bei vielen elektronischen projekten ist die musik sozusagen -in der box- geschrieben worden. um dieser technik entgegenzuwirken, schrieben die drei mitglieder von groeni (al, mike und james) jeweils zahlreiche kompositionsskizzen, bevor sie in den digitalen bereich gelangten. mit ähnlicher inspiration wollte die band einzigartige und personalisierte sounds außerhalb des computers erstellen. die überwiegende mehrheit der drumsounds wurde aus samples von mikes immer umfangreicher werdender synth-sammlung gemacht. zahlreiche sounds sind manipulierte rückkopplungen von unter anderem gitarren oder vocals. die gesamte platte wurde in drei heimstudios in wellington, nz, geschrieben und aufgenommen und hat fast zwei jahre bis zur fertigstellung gebraucht. die limitierte vinyl auflage enthält einen mp3-download-coupon.
